On December 5, such a message attracted attention on the Internet - "Due to insufficient supply of chips, SAIC-Volkswagen will stop production from December 4, and FAW-Volkswagen will also stop production from early December."

The news was quickly confirmed by the public. The Volkswagen Group responded that the uncertainty brought about by the new crown pneumonia epidemic has affected the supply of chips for some specific automotive electronic components. A full recovery in the Chinese market has also further boosted demand, making the situation even more dire, putting some car production at risk of disruption. They said that while chip supply was affected, the situation was not as serious as rumored and a solution was being sought.

In fact, compared to the outside world, the front-line employees of Volkswagen got the news earlier. As early as December 1, Liu Long, an employee of the Volkswagen factory, heard the news of "no parts", and there were even rumors that he would "take a half-month vacation".

Subsequently, more and more factories reported that ESP chips and ECU chips were out of stock.

Chip out of stock affects far more than just North and South Volkswagen, but the entire auto industry. According to some media reports, factories such as Honda and Geely have also stopped work.

According to a survey by Gasgoo.com, in a survey of more than 1,600 participants, 48% of the participants said that their companies have encountered shortages in chip inventory, supply cuts or price increases, and only 17%. The participants believe that the current supply is all right.

With the improvement of automobile intelligence and electrification, various chips are used more and more in automobiles, and their roles are becoming more and more important.

Bosch also sees supply chain bottlenecks for certain components and believes it cannot be avoided, however, despite market competition, they remain in close contact with suppliers and customers to maintain the supply chain as much as possible.

Unlike traditional automakers with larger shipments, this time new automakers don't seem to be affected much. Weilai Automobile, Xiaopeng Automobile, and Ideal Automobile all said that they are not currently affected by the shortage of chips.

In He Yi's view, the reason why new car companies are not affected is that the sales of several cars are not very high, so the inventory may be able to support for a period of time.

The automotive electronics industry chain is divided into upper, middle and lower reaches. The upstream is automotive semiconductor chip and component manufacturers, such as NXP, Infineon, and Renesas. The midstream is Tier1 (Tier 1 suppliers) such as Bosch and Continental. It's the OEM.

This year, the demand for chips in the consumer electronics industry has increased significantly, which has also exacerbated the shortage of chips.

"Driven by the development of 5G technology, the demand for chips in the consumer electronics field is increasing rapidly this year, and the chip production capacity has encountered challenges and seized the production capacity of some automotive chips." Due to the severe damage, the fire made it impossible to resume production at the plant for at least six months, and the shutdown time may even be as long as a year.

According to industry insiders, AKM is a niche chip that is difficult to replace in the short term. Moreover, AKM's products are mainly concentrated in high-end applications such as in-vehicles, and even replacement will take a long time. Therefore, after the fire, many vehicle factories began to rush for goods, resulting in a shortage of AKM products.

Enterprise video communication service provider ZOOM has also been implicated. Almost all major products developed and sold by the company use electronic parts produced by AKM. "Since September this year, there has been no day without overtime," said Yang Yang, an employee of a chip trading company. Her job is mainly to connect sales and place foreign orders to various suppliers.

In addition to working overtime, you also need to work overtime on weekends. Even so, she still has work to do. In the past, their company's sales staff needed to go out to find customers, but this year, just maintaining old customers has been too busy. Yang Yang's company has encountered a chip market that has not been seen for many years this year. In previous years, autumn and winter were also peak seasons for the chip industry, but they ended in December at most.

But this year, the growth rate of orders is staggering. "Even if we stop taking orders now, the current orders can be placed until August next year."

With the surge in orders, the industry began to compete for the capacity of chip packaging plants. According to Yang Yang's understanding, the delivery date of some of the factories she has docked has been extended from the original 3-4 weeks to about 20 weeks.

In order to gain more production capacity for customers, she has to travel recently and sit directly in the other party's office to work on site.

In mid-November, Yang Yang just went to a factory. "I heard from the phone that the other party didn't want us to come over." However, she still stayed for a week and finally "grinded" 15% more production capacity.

But lately it's getting harder and harder to be productive. With the substantial increase in the demand for chips in automobiles, the automotive chip market has brought new opportunities and faced new changes.

In the past, automotive chips were controlled by traditional automotive chip giants such as NXP, Infineon, and Texas Instruments. However, with the continuous improvement of automobile intelligence, more and more interactions with users are involved. Therefore, chip giants in the consumer field such as Qualcomm, Intel, and Nvidia have also entered the automotive chip market.

Taking Qualcomm as an example, its automotive chips include automotive chips, autonomous driving chips and other fields.

In the field of automotive chips, Qualcomm released 602A automotive chips in 2014 and signed cooperation with Audi and other car companies. In 2016, it launched 820A automotive chips. Many models currently sold such as Xiaopeng P7, Ideal ONE, BYD Tang EV and Land Rover Discovery Sport are equipped with this chip.

In the field of self-driving chips, in 2017, Qualcomm first disclosed its plans to develop self-driving car chips. And in September of that year, Qualcomm introduced the 9150 C-V2X chip, which allows cars to communicate with infrastructure such as cars or lights, and is compatible with 5G and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) sensors. In December 2016, the California Department of Motor Vehicles granted Qualcomm a license to test self-driving cars in California.

In early 2019, Qualcomm released the self-driving platform Snapdragon Ride, which supports L1 to L5 autonomous driving. Qualcomm said that by 2023, their automotive chips will be used in mass-produced self-driving cars.

When it first entered the field of automotive chips, Qualcomm adopted an acquisition strategy. In 2016, they launched the largest deal in the history of the semiconductor industry - announcing the acquisition of NXP Semiconductors for $39 billion, but the deal ultimately fell through for various reasons.

In contrast, Intel has successfully entered this market through acquisitions. In 2017, Intel announced that it would acquire Mobileye, an Israeli autonomous driving technology company, for $15.3 billion and merge with Intel's Autonomous Driving Division (ADG) to form a new autonomous driving division.

The acquisition gives Intel a big step forward in autonomous driving. In 2019, autonomous driving chips became Intel's largest growing business segment, with revenue increasing by 26% year-on-year, occupying 70% of the global assisted driving chip market.

In April 2020, Intel announced that Mobileye's EyeQ chips had sold 54 million units and were installed in more than 50 million cars worldwide.

By entering the GPU business, NVIDIA also has a place in the field of autonomous driving chips. In 2015, NVIDIA released DRIVE PX, a new smart car processing platform built by Tegra X1. In September 2016, NVIDIA announced the Xavier platform, which is more advanced than Drive PX, saying that it can provide technology with L4 autonomous driving capabilities.

In 2019, NVIDIA released Orin for the automotive industry. The computing power of a single chip can reach 200TOPS per second, and its performance is 7 times that of Xavier. It can cover the development of fully autonomous vehicles from L2 to L5, and will start mass production in 2022. Produce.

In China, in September of this year, Li Auto and NVIDIA announced that they have reached a cooperation, and their cars will be equipped with NVIDIA's latest generation of Orin series chips.

In addition to the crossover of consumer electronics chip giants, there are also opportunities for domestic substitution in China.

At present, domestic automotive chips are mainly imported. According to Wanlian Securities, the import rate of domestic automotive chips is as high as 95%, among which key chips such as powertrain, chassis control and ADAS are monopolized by foreign giants.

On November 26, at the 2020 China Automobile Supply Chain Summit, Min Long, general manager of Changan Automobile Purchasing Center, mentioned that due to the economic downturn and the impact of the epidemic, the production of upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain has been largely interrupted, revenue has dropped sharply, and operations have deteriorated; Work stoppages and tight capital chains have led to price hikes for some key components and raw materials, such as silicon metal, electronic chips, etc. The trade war has resulted in sanctions on some companies, and there is a risk of supply cuts for stuck parts such as chips and capacitors, and key components are independently controllable become a priority.

According to the data of the Prospective Industry Research Institute, in 2019, NXP, Infineon, Renesas, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics maintained the top 5 automotive chip manufacturers, and these five companies accounted for a combined market share of 50%.

However, in recent years, domestic manufacturers have also begun to make efforts in the field of automotive chips, including some auto OEMs.

Such as BYD. In 2004, they established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Shenzhen BYD Microelectronics; in 2005, BYD established an IGBT R&D team and formally laid out the IGBT industry. In 2008, it acquired Zhongwei Integrated Circuit (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. for 171 million yuan and changed its name to Ningbo BYD Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

In September 2009, BYD's first-generation IGBT chip was successfully developed. So far, its IGBT chips have been updated to the fourth generation, with a monthly production capacity of 50,000 pieces, and it is expected to reach 100,000 pieces/month by 2021.

In 2019, BYD's market share of domestic automotive-grade IGBT modules was 18%, ranking second only to Infineon.

Therefore, when Volkswagen was affected by the shortage of chips this time, BYD was calm, saying that the company has a complete industrial chain in terms of chips, which can not only be fully self-sufficient, but also have a margin for external supply.

In May and June 2020, BYD Semiconductor completed the A and A+ rounds of financing, attracting Sequoia Capital China Fund and CICC Capital to invest, with a total financing amount of 2.7 billion yuan, and its valuation also rose from 7.5 billion to 30 billion. Yuan.

In addition, BAIC, SAIC, and Geely have also joined forces with chip manufacturers to enter the chip market. BAIC Production and Investment and Imagination Group signed an agreement to jointly establish Beijing Hexinda Technology Co., Ltd.; Geely Group and ARM China jointly established Hubei Core Engine Technology; SAIC and Infineon jointly established an IGBT company, SAIC Infineon Automotive Power Semiconductor (Shanghai). ) Ltd.

Among the new car manufacturers, both Ideal and Weilai have built autonomous driving teams and started the process of self-development of autonomous driving chips.

A number of non-automotive companies such as Horizon are also targeting automotive chips.

Horizon launched the second generation of Journey in August 2019, becoming the first car-grade AI chip in China. In September this year, Horizon released a new generation of high-performance chips, Journey 3, which supports L3-L4 autonomous driving. In addition, Horizon also plans to launch a more powerful vehicle-grade AI chip, Journey 6.

Since the beginning of this year, the automotive chip industry has also ushered in favorable policies. On September 19, 2020, jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, as a national common technology innovation platform, initiated the "China Automotive Chip Industry Innovation Strategic Alliance". The goal is to promote the construction of a complete independent supply system and internal circulation pattern of key automotive chips, ensure the safety and stability of the industrial chain, and enhance the core competitiveness of the domestic automotive chip industry.

However, the progress of domestic replacement of chips is not achieved overnight. Due to the issue of vehicle safety, the manufacturing process and reliability of automotive-grade chips are highly demanding, and strict testing is also required, all of which take time.

However, the good side is that although there is still a gap between domestic chips and foreign standards, they are gradually being recognized by the market. For example, BYD, Jiefa Technology and other companies have begun to enter the industry chain.
