Under pressure from MediaTek, Qualcomm will mass-produce mid-range Snapdragon 5G chips using 6nm process

In the 5G era, MediaTek has re-emerged through the Dimensity 720, 800, 1000 and the upcoming 2000, especially in the mid-end market, and has seized a large amount of Qualcomm's original share, of which it has reached 27% in 2020. Under this pressure, Qualcomm fought back and will mass-produce mid-range 5G chips using 6nm.

From being unpopular in the past to the number one shipment of mobile phone SoCs, MediaTek's progress is obvious to all. Previously, a data report released by market research agency Omdia showed that MediaTek successfully surpassed Qualcomm in 2020 and became the world's largest smartphone chip supplier. In the face of MediaTek's rapid progress, Qualcomm will naturally not let it go. According to @Mobile Chip Daren, Qualcomm is ready to come back. Qualcomm, which suffered from shortages in the first half of the year, will mass-produce TSMC's 6nm process mid-segment 5G chips in the third quarter, and is ready to regain its lost market share with MediaTek. .

In addition, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vvio are all in trial production, and the pressure on MediaTek will be very obvious in the third quarter.

MediaTek ranks first in smartphone SoC shipments, which is inseparable from the success of Dimensity 720, Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 1000+. Thanks to the two mid-range chips, the Dimensity 720 and the Dimensity 800, MediaTek occupies most of the market share of mid-range 5G mobile phones. Among them, the market share of the Dimensity 800 even surpassed that of the Kirin 820, becoming the mid-range solution second only to the Snapdragon 765G. And Dimensity 1000+ and Dimensity 1200 have helped MediaTek realize its high-end dream.

At present, Qualcomm still has an absolute advantage in the flagship market, but if it wants to overtake MediaTek, it is imperative to aggressively attack the mid-segment market.

However, MediaTek will not sit still. On high-end 5G chips, according to the well-known blogger @Digital Chat Station, TSMC will trial-produce 4nm chips in the second half of the year, while news from the supply chain said that MediaTek will trial-produce flagship chips based on this process in Q4 this year, and Mass production will be achieved in 2022. From the perspective of MediaTek's deployment, it will use the Dimensity 2000 series to benchmark Qualcomm 888 and other flagship processors, and the 4nm chip will be used to impact Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon 895 chip.
