Volkswagen, Toyota plants suspend production due to chip shortages
Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant produces the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport crossover and Passat sedan. Last year, Volkswagen sold 87,362 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport units in the U.S., up 7.2 percent from a year earlier. That same year, U.S. sales of the Passat jumped 63 percent to 22,964, and the Chattanooga plant will stop producing Passat models in 2023.
During the shutdown, Volkswagen will focus on production line and quality improvements, training and preparations for production of the ID.4 electric crossover, which is scheduled to enter production in 2022.
In addition, Toyota also said on May 18 that it will suspend the operation of three production lines at two Japanese factories in June due to the shortage of chips. Two plants owned by Toyota Motor East Japan will stop production, reducing production by about 20,000 vehicles.
A production line at Toyota's Iwate plant, which makes the C-HR compact SUV, will stop for eight days. Another production line responsible for making the Yaris compact sedan, as well as the Yaris Cross compact SUV, will stop for five days. A production line for the Yaris Cross at the Miyagi Prefecture plant will be shut down for three days.
